Command Set Shock Units

There occasionally seems to be some confusion about the weight bearing capacity of shock units used in the trio of Command Sets (ARA/ATA, SCR-274N, and AN/ARC-5).

Strictly speaking, these little shock absorbers are simply called "shock absorber cup assemblies", made similarly but not identical to the same stamping used for the medium size capacitors in command receivers. Instead of a window of mica, the manufacturer simply inserted a variation of the popular shock absorbers of the era - adding a snap slide post to the assembly before crimping. Cutting to the chase, here is the info on these shock absorbers for the various receiver and transmitter combinations:

In the very beginning, it's likely that Aircraft Radio Corporation made these using Lord rubber inserts, but with the wartime upswing overwhelming ARC, the manufacturing of these cups probably included WECO, Stromberg Carlson, and possibly even Lord Corporation itself as well.

The shock unit is a bit more complex than one might expects. Below are photos of one that I dissected to show the piece parts which go into the unit.

While these shock units may look like the capacitors in the set (which had both steel and aluminum versions), they are all made of steel and have steel reinforcements at both ends to counter sudden excursions in turbulence and battle. The heavily rusted sleeve in the upper snap slide stud is a hollow steel spacer that is molded into the rubber portion of the mount and retained to the mount by the limit washer and nut to its right. The thin ring at far right is also molded into the rubber, and gets crimped into the top of the cup.

I cut off most of the casing of one damaged shock so you can see the steel reinforcing nut plate ring that is spot welded in three places onto the bottom of the cup.

Lord also made (and still make) more normal looking assemblies. For a little more graphic detail, I offer the chart below: The command sets use a 100 Series rubber component.
