Navy M-5A/UR
Introduced in the last year of the war, this is an adaptation of a Marine Corps set mike that originally hung over
the operator's head and nestled against the skin between the lip and the nose - very uncomfortable to say the least.
Because of its noise cancelling characteristics, someone got the bright idea of making it into a boom mike for the
airdales. The Navy initially called the assembly only by the designation for the boom assembly, M-5/UR, primarily
because it was only available for retrofitting to existing headsets. When the entire boom headset assembly became
available, it was given the nomenclature H-46/UR. Below are the "retrofit" instructions from
Airborne Radio Maintenance Notes dated November 1945. Note that it is aleady been modified to an "A"
release configuration.
