Training aircraft

Training aircraft often seemed to receive leftovers from the active duty fleet in both the Navy and USAAC/USAAF. Below are two variants of the same basic airframe made by North American, the first circa 1936 when the BT-9 variant was first introduced.

North American BT-9 with ARC RDF and BC-**-229 (SCR-**-183) receiver in center. This must be an AA through AF variant of the BC-229, as it has a flat dial face. Another SCR-183 set is on the right side (mounted face to face). The transmitter appears to be an BC-AE-230 or earlier series...(the Western Electric built -AF- has a white meter face). Above the BC-230 is a BC-304 interphone control box.

The two photos below show the current unrestored condition of the NASM's SNJ-4, a Navy variant. Note the similar face to face configuration of the SCR-183 to allow easy changing of the tuning units (and difficulty in reading any front panel controls...)
